Default pull strap knot under or below holster flap

'Seen differing holsters some with the draw strap knot hidden under the flap, with a bulge in the flap, and others with the strap extended lower so the knot is visible and below the flap. with the Luger in the holster and the strap in its natural place, which way is the authentic or standard look ?

With the pistol inserted in the normal position so the flap can be closed, the knot should be under the flap and right at the hole if the strap is the correct length and not stretched. When you pull on the knot with the left hand, the pistol is raised for withdrawal with the right hand. This is how it works when the pistol is worn in the traditional position in front of the left hip.

If the strap is longer, it has either been replaced by an amateur, the holster is a reproduction by someone who doesn't understand the design, or the strap has been constantly doused in some kind of leather goop or oil to keep it supple and has stretched to the point of really being unserviceable.

I hope this has been helpful.

John is quite correct of course! I just returned from Cody Wyoming, a visit to the Buffalo Bill Firearms Museum and a trip thru Yellowstone National Park.
One further thing...These knots were hand tied. They are extremely varied in width, thickness & placement. They varied from WW1 to WW2, I have a bag of them I have collected over the years and almost no two are alike.
Some on early holsters were made of canvas and riveted!
