HI all, I am a Newbie obviously, so I am probably asking all the same newbie Questions...sorry.
I have a 1918 S/42 ,German military receiver proof. Found on DWM Lugers 1914-1918. all the serial numbers match, including the mag. It has bakelite grips instead of wood. and the barrell may have been replaced @ Mauser. Not sure there. My obvious question is, what is the value of this pistol? |

Welcome to the Lugerforum and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your "matching" number pistol is not matching because if the Toggle is marked S/42, then it was made in the late 1930's and not in 1918 like the rest of the gun. Some previous owner probably found a toggle that had a matching number and replaced the toggle that was in the original pistol because it was damaged or not the right serial number to be "matching"...
Regarding the value, it will depend on the condition of the pistol, and many other factors. As a parts gun, value starts around $500 if it has not been refinished or plated, and might be worth a couple of hundred more. You can get a better idea by posting all the information that is on the Identification forms that you can download from our technical pages at Lugerforum.com Posting clear focus photographs of both sides, top, and front of the receiver would also help in the value estimate. If your bakelite grips are original wartime German issue, then they are worth at least $200 by themselves. But since your gun is parts gun, the grips may be reproductions. If they are reproduction grips, they are only worth about $20-25. To determine if they are original will require you to post good clear closeup photos of both the front and back sides of the grips. Be extemely careful in removing the left grip because it may have been in place for over 50 years and may be prone to chipping out a small piece near the safety if removed in haste.
