Default 1917 Luger questions Newbee

I'm new here. I just took possesion of my grandfather's Luger. It has 1917 on top of barrel and also on top of gun it has what appears to be a crown and underneath the crown ERFURT. On the left side where the barrel connects to frame the numbers 8222. Is this a potentially valuable gun? Is there a manual on it? I'd like to disassemble it to clean it. I believe it's a 9mm, is this correct. In short any info you can give me would be appreciated or just point me in the right direction. I've done some searching but I not quite sure which direction to search. From intial inspection, it appears to have matching parts. Thank you for any help you can provide. I'm not even an amateur when it comes to guns so please keep it simple.

Hi Jay,

Welcome to the forum. You have a 1917 production Luger built by the gov't arsenal at Erfurt, and should be in 9mm.

8222 is the serial number and should be stamped on the front of the frame just below the barrel, and on the bottom of the barrel also. Several other small parts should be stamped 22 to corrilate with the last two numbers of the serial number.

The value depends on condition. It could range from $300 to $2000 depending on several factors. Can you post photos?

Ron

NO..... it would have to be VERY special. In fact, to get even close to the $9750 where it sold, it would have to be a complete Artillery or Navy Rig and that said, there were NO 1917 artillery's made or I beleive navies made by Erfurt.

Folks see the high prices and assume that all lugers are worth that. Sorry, it is not true.
Besides $2,000 1917 would be for a VERY nice 1917, most sell for around $1000-$1300... Artillerys more.....

farid,

If you are referring to the Artillery Luger that sold for over $9000 being discussed in another thread on this forum?

It is a very exceptional and pristine example with all correct and excellent holster, stock and tools. 1917 Erfurt Lugers are common and do not command exceptionally high prices.

If a 4" 1917 Erfurt was in mint condition with two issue matching magazines and with an as issued holster in excellent condition. It would still be in the $2500 range at a maximum.
