Sean... can we see more of this gun. The number alone is not enough for a good judgement of the unit mark. It could be virtually any service... but the other marks should tell more of the story. BTW, are you gonna be around Winchester for lunch tomorrow?

Sean,
Don't believe it's a unit mark, but rather a rack number. Unit marks are found on the front grip strap, back grip strap, once in a while the side panel or even the chamber top. Ron

Ron, so you are saying that it does not have a unit mark. Why? Was that normal? So i guess I can tell very little history from these markings. Is this true?
Thanks very much Ed & Ron for the help. Sean.....

Sean,
I didn't see any marks in your photos other than the 1.N.4 on the rear of the frame. If this is the mark that you are referring to? Then no, it's not a unit mark. Possibly a Police or some other unit's rack number, I.D. number or inventory number. I don't know of , nor can I find any plausible translation for this mark. Ron

I would propose that the marking is located where it is and in the non standard form because it was applied as a provisional marking prior to the 1922 or 1923 Reichswehr directives. The meaning may be 1st Nachrichtenabteilung Waffen no. 4...First communications detachment, weapon four.

Geo,
That's a possibility. Didn't think of a provisional marking. Good point. Sean, My apologies, I should have researched this a bit more thoroughly. Geo is correct. Getting drifty in my old age. I was looking for an Imperial unit mark. Didn't even consider Weimar markings. I would be interested in this Luger if you should ever decide to sell it. Ron

Sean,
History on these support units is kind of scarce. Here are some photos of Nachrichten units. Ron

Thanks for the info George! Lady's and gentleman, George Anderson is the man who was at the last Chantilly, Va. show, after telling him what i wanted, and not having it on his table, and seeing, i was not the most informed, he took 45 minutes of his time away from his table, to walk the show with me, to HELP ME FIND MY FIRST LUGER! He did a great job, and i am truly thankful! I lost George's card and have been asking around. I just had lunch today with John (Sabato) , (another great guy!) and asked him, he knew just who i was talking about. Thanks Guys, for all your help! Sean.....

Richie,
I think it's a code lantern. I have seen something similar. It has different colored lenses to signal in color codes as well as signal flashes. Ron

Sean, well I thought that the pistol's marking looked familiar, it's the pistol that you bought from Charlie Kaplan. A good buy.
