I did a search and found a luger for auction (this one had been offered without a picture weeks ago, starting at $1,000). The writeup said the gun had a german general's initials inscribed on it (this got my attention). The gun is back at http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?item=994965 and now has pictures. The general's initials? DWM ......."Buy It Now" for $3,500 is faaar too much.

Yes, that is funny. Obviously, since it has been passed down from generation to generation and it has been in the family since 1912 when it was liberated from General D.W.M, and only had to be 'upgraded' once (in 1916) it should be well worth the asking price of $3500. (It would be sad if the seller really buys his/her own story, but..I got a laugh out of it).

and this 1912-dated luger is dated 1916; specially for secrecy to confuse the enemy. Its strawed parts look blued--special order for General Munitionsfabriken. Handed down from generation to generation, although the facts may have failed to accompany the pistol. The well-worn grips and pitting were from the constant bickering between General DWM and his rival, General Erfurt. SO arrogant was Gen. Erfurt that he placed a crown over his name.

Man, you guys are tough. When I first saw the ad, I was tempted to write an email, but decided it probably wouldn't do any good. I sure hope nobody falls for the story.

Now everyone will know that's how you were able to determine heirarchy in the German Army, the size and type of the font use to engrave your initials. Poor old Colonel byf... I'll bet he wished he had waited until he was a general before he put his initials on all his guns.

By the way, the 1916 DWM luger appears to have a metal bottomed magazine with a very Nazi look to it.....!

Nazi magazine, on a 1912 (restamped to 1916) pistol? Obviously a real rarity (how could they have known?)..could be worth at least, oh say, maybe $3500?
