Default Thor Giveaway Announcement

God has been so good to me and my family. We are really enjoying doing restorations of fine Luger pistols. I am thoroughly indebted to many fine people that have been my friends through the starting of our business. Natalie and I have discussed this today and want to do something nice for at least one of these close friends. I have an item that I would like to present as a gift to one of them and because I am not going to cut it into 7 pieces so I am going to let the Good Lord decide which should get it. In one weeks time my youngest daughter will pull one of these names out of the Thor winged cap and the lucky winner will get the item. There are many more friends than just those on the list but I feel compelled to cut the list to only 7 to draw one name from. The good part is there is NO ENTRY fee for those lucky 7 folks. I am NOT going to announce the item prior to the drawing. The drawing will take place on August 19th of this year, one week from today. Then I will announce it on the forum. Thanks for helping make our lives so good! The list of my seven close and dear friends are:
1. Ralph Shattuck 2. John Dunkle 3. Gerry Tomek 4. Jerry Burney 5. Hugh Clark 6. Don Hamilton 7. John Sabato

Ted,

I appreciate your gesture, but if my name is drawn, I refuse to take Natalie, one wife is enough!

Ted, Calm down, your giving it away not getting it! When I win, do I have to have a truck to haul it off? Maybe it's a six foot rocket? Jerry

Thumbs up We have a Winner!!!

My daughter picked out a marked ball out of a can. She wore a blind fold and I rolled them around a lot and mixed them. The ball she picked out had the initials RS for Ralph Shattuck. I know he has lots of Lugers and now he has won another one. My first variation K date Luger that I restored. I will contact him soon and let him know. Thanks to all my friends for all you do for TLSS. I love all of you!

Ted, Considerable reflection occurred after learning what your prize is. I have to say that no Man of Honor and integrity could accept such a gift. I thank the Good Lord it was not I who was picked. While I would not be opposed to paying a fair sum for such a beautiful pistol I would not want to be the man to take food off your table or deprive your two beautiful Daughters of what they deserve. Either you have won the Million dollar lottery or you need to see a Dr. Giving away a pistol worth 2-3-5000 dollars to anyone, let alone a man who has 2-3-4-5million dollars worth of them already, qualifies as eccentric at the very least.
I have to say this also, if someone actually accepts this gift, he is a small man indeed. You have put Ralph Shattuck in a very unenviable position.
I know what you did was from the heart but the heart should check in with the head every once in awhile. Your Friend, Jerry Burney

Ted,

You are one class act! I now feel even more privledged that you are doing work on my gun! I don't think I deserve to have a man of your quality and stature doing work for me, but I am truly blessed.

You will have a customer for life, but that was already the case even before you did this incredible act of kindness. I think you showed me that Luger when I visited you and it was outstanding!

Words alone are hard to describe the kindness in your heart!

Blessings,
Jack

My father doesn't get excited by much anymore, but this Christmas he told me about the time he got to shoot a Luger when he was a young man, so I decided I'd try to get him one. I did a very little research and it seemed a K was the right thing to try to get since he was born in '34 and they're so historically fascinating/important.

Of course, I quickly found out how much even a decent K date costs. I really didn't have much hope, but then I saw this incredibly beautiful K date for sale. Long story short, I got it in time to still slip it under the tree before my parents took it down.

A little more research on the three red dots on the magazine well and another shortened story led me here.

How great it is to know my gift had already been such a beautiful gift.

Thanks again, Ted

PS My dad is thrilled.

Nice story, but making a new thread instead of appending one to a 2005 give away may have been best.

Welcome to the forum

I am guessing that you bought a restored K date that Ted / Thor did??

Brad -

That's really cool, that this Luger is still active. Do you have any pictures of it??? No story is complete without pics!

Can you relate the story and the research that led you to it??? Maybe a link to that 'shortened story'???

If there is anything lacking on a historical Luger, it's the story behind it. It almost always goes untold.

Yep, the same gun that Ralph Ended up with , I am pleased to find out where it ended up. I was contacted by a Luger Collector last year that was looking to buy it. Of course, I no longer owned it. Such is Life and time sure does fly.

Sadly, the longer stories aren’t interesting and add nothing to the the pre-Thor history of the gun. It was in pursuit of that history which led me to reach out to Ted in the first place, but my understanding is that he knows little of its past. I also know nothing of its path after Ralph and have to admit to being uninterested. Therefore, the only things I think I could add here are these:

1) The remarkable amount I know about Lugers, which is certainly vastly less than any of you, is because people like you have researched and shared so much. Thank you.

2) Ted’s three-dot signature is every bit as important to me as any of the other markings on the gun. I believe, as someone else said, that having a TLSS restoration will someday add significant value to the gun, if it doesn’t already. For me this isn’t terribly important. I think wars are atrocious and the Third Reich an appalling reminder of our ability to be led to commit acts of unmitigated evil. When you have the chance to hold in your hands a Luger as pristine as this one or feel the crescendo of a Merlin as a P-51 flies overhead, you are forced, in a way no book or movie ever could, to confront our ability to both create works of astounding and functional beauty and wreak unimaginable horror. A peaceful society will be made up of people who have come to terms with this conflict that lies within each of us and the ones who lead us will be artists like Ted.

I initially found that gun and purchased it from Brocks Surplus in 2002, before that who knows where it lived.
