SOG Lugers....

Hi all.

I'm a newbie to Lugers. Just like everyone else on the planet who loves guns, the Luger holds a special place in my heart. I shot a .22 Luger take off once, a long time ago.....

So I'm kinda wondering what you guys think about the Lugers now being offered by SOG. Are they worth the asking price? What rank of collectability would you put them?

I just saw them as well. I had bought a P-1 from them last year and it was in v-good condition. I don't know about these and the P-38's they are now listing.

They look nice, but they say they aren't matching serial numbers and that they've all been refurbed. Some with original finish and some that have been reblued.

With the mismatching numbers and the import billboard on the side, I'm just wondering if these are worth the $675 OTD (with handpick, of course)......

Steve, save your money, slide down to Hickory to the C&E gunshow or join the NC Gun Collectors and start going to their Charlotte show. You will find a much better value at about the same price. Even that pathetic show in Ashville will occaisionally burp up a Luger. Good luck.

LMAO :-D You're not kidding it's pathetic. Last time they had it (December) I went with a (rare) pocket full of cash, looking for almost anything to buy.

I went home with 500 more rounds of .45...... Heck, I had to by something.... :-P

Can you please give me some more information about the NC Gun Collectors George? Anything would be greatly appreciated. And thanks for the tip against the SOG jobs. I actually placed the order, called the next day to find out if it had shipped (which it hadn't, thankfully) and then called back to cancel it.

I've been uncertain that I had done the right thing until your confirmation. And for that, I thank you very much. I'll just go and buy a nice Mak or something until I can educate myself further in Lugers and then find just the right deal.

Steve, I have lived in Morganton from time to time over the years but am now back home. The NCGCA is a good solid group and worth your attention. Ref the SOG lugers. If I could look them over, or they had many pictures, that is probably not a bad price for a "rep" piece, provided the rep piece is the right one...

I bet they sell, cuz the average joe-blow thinks ALL lugers are worth $1500-$3000 each...

Or we'll get lucky, and they do the, buy 2 for $900 dealie they do with Nagants (2 fer $150)

Yeah Ed, I'd do a twofer deal at that price. I just got two of their Nagant pistols when they ran that special last month. I'd pay $450 each and buy two though. But at $640 apiece, for those guns, ain't gunna happen.... Not now anyway....

Someone on the Gunboard forum went to SOG and seen them. Numbers do not match and from what he could tell they look to be Russion rework, reblued.

Hey there....I'm new here at this board and wanted to contribute pics of my SOG Luger. I ordered via the web on Saturday the 8th and received it yesterday, the 12th. I called on Monday to request that the handpick fee of 25 bucks was added. Valerie from SOG was extremely helpful and I only asked for a Luger with Nazi proofs. I was hesistant to order from SOG due to all the horror stories, but I must say that I'm very pleased with what I received. I'm a complete novice at Lugers (I have Garand-itis) so any feedback would be appreciated. It looks like they sent a 1940/42 model which was made by Mauser. Fortunately it looks like all numbers match. CAI's billboard is a little big for me, but I'm still very happy. Here are some pics:

Thanks for posting photo examples of the SOG Lugers. It looks like quite a serviceable shooter, but I agree completely that the import mark was totally overkill. They could have complied with the law in a much smaller format where it didn't show so bad...

That won't affect it's accuracy, only it's collectability and history...

It should shoot just fine...

If someday you decide that you also want it "pretty", you can have Ted Green (Thor) our resident Luger master restoration expert, restore it for you... He spends his talents correcting years of Luger abuse.

and his services are well worth the effort and money...

Looks like mine. I received mine on the 11th. It is a 41 BYF matching(except for mag. and possibly sideplate) with black plastic grips. I ordered a BYF because I have a RC 98k that is a 41 BYF also. I knew I had a 50/50 chance for a 1941, and got it. I did not know Lugers ever came with plastic grips. I thought the grips were just cheap replacements. After reading here and other sites, I now think there are original. The serial # is 54, but I can not determine the suffix. The mag. is a blued(slight reddish/brown) with aluminum bottom, that is coated black. The mag. has a M on the back, and two stamps on the right side. They look like they were supposed to have circles around them, but were not stamped very well. One looks like "KK" or "RR" with a "4" underneith. The other looks to be "10" or "19" Sorry I do not have a digital camera. Is there a site that has the suffixs pictured besides here?

And excellant work Ed. Still the only conclusion I can come up with is the suffix is a "q" with the top half or 2/3 of the O part of the "q" missing. The bottom part that is there is very deeply stamped and then begins to thin out just above the the bottom portion of the O part of the "q". Just wished I had a digital camera. But the new(another) gun vs. camera debate hasn't changed yet

Sorry to change topics but if it is Serial # 54q what type of mag. would match the gun.

Looks like a byf 41 in the q block would have an type Army 4 magazine, a blued tube, black plastic bottom magazine, haenel made with square cut bottom of the tube and zigzag (rectangular) spring in the mag, marked with fxo code and P.08 on left side of magazine, might have Eagle over 37 coding too. Reference from Jan Still's "Third Reich Luger" page 125.

Daves01ss and other new Luger owners,

you should know that the original black grips on "black widow" Lugers are made of bakelite and not "plastic" as we know it today... these grips are at least 64 years old or older and can be extremely fragile depending on how they have been cared for an stored over the years. Shooting with these grips is NOT recommended for this reason. You should obtain some aftermarket grips for shooting sessions...

I can highly recommend East German grips (these vary from brown to black and some reddish marble plastic and have a bullseye target design on each side) and fit the Mauser made Lugers Very Well. They are not expensive, but prices keep rising. They feel good in the hand.

Another good shooter grip is the Russian type replacement grip that is made of black plastic and has vertical grooves instead of checkering.

Use these or other wooden grips for shooting and save the originals.
