It's difficult to tell if the original marking of 28.G.M.G.23. was a mistake or not but the first "G" has obviously been over-stamped with an "R". 28.R.M.G.23. should read "28th Infantry Regiment, Machine Gun Company, weapon No. 23."

If the original over-stamped "G" wasn't a mistake, then I'd have to look at Noll's book to see what it designated. However, it ended up with the 28th Infantry Regiment.

kidvett, What an unusual marking! Doubs is absolutely correct on the 28 Infantery Regiment Machine Gun company. I do disagree on one thing. Looks to me the armorer picked-up the wrong punch and stamped a "G" frirst then overstamped the "R". If you look at the overstamped letter and compare it to the "G" you will see it is one and the same. w/r Jeff Noll http://home.earthlink.net/~nopubl
