This is the 2nd time I saw a finned barrel Mauser. The other one was pictured by Chinese police. That one was a Schnellfeuer-like pistol in poor shape (like others C96s pictured).

So finned barrel is not totally out of scope.

But this one was refurbished, and looks like having a welded on barrel. That Schnell I mentioned earlier, no idea. The picture was not clear enough. Remain a myth.

Hi Alvin,
Personally, I have always thought that the myth had its origins in confusion with the Spanish Super Azul copies, which did have finned barrels and they were selective full auto, so may been what you saw in the China photo? ("System Mauser" page 218)

This does resemble a Beistegui Hnos. "Royal" MM34 at first glance, but something is not quite right. I would agree with it being a welded-on barrel.

Very strange indeed.
My first thought was a MM34 barrel installed on a CH. However, looking at my Royal MM34, shown by Angus, it is clear that its barrel is much more thick than the one on gun for sale. In addition, the Royal barrel has 30 rings while the other one has 29.

Yes, I'm in Brazil. Because of our very strange laws concerning firearms, I guess our market is not a good parameter. This one came in for an unbelievable low price, the the former owner was leaving the hobby.

The MM34 is a fully automatic weapon and this one is a live gun. Civilians are allowed to own a full auto if it was made before 1945 and if you have a permission (a Collector License) of the Brazilian Army. On the other hand, mind you that we are not allowed to carry anything bigger than a .380ACP auto for selfdefense on a day-by-day situation.

My research about the MM34 still runs. As far as I know there are even some doubts who made them, but it is sure that only a few hundred were assembled. For further info and pictures, check this old topic:

Agree. It's hard to make sense out of Hollywood.

Ironically, it's Hollywood making C96 a well-known weapon in America (although some people still believe it's a "Luger" in range

Douglas, I enjoyed your summary in the other thread. I'm a big fan of broomhandles and did spend some considerable time searching for more information on the MM34 (and hopefully how to get my hands on one) but there is very little information out there.

Sorry to deviate the topic, but I have to ask a few questions...
Have you come across others in Brasil?
Do you have a close-up photo of the stock latch/release button?
Also, if you don't mind my curiosity, what was the "unbelievably low price"?

No problem at all (just hope Alvin doesn't mind)!

I'm aware of at least three others MM34 in Brazil, - one of them I had the opportunity to handle a few years ago. Unfortunately that one had been buffed and reblued and hadn't any magazine or stock. It is known that these guns came to Brazil to be used by law enforcement agencies of several States.

Documents has yet to surface to know how many. My personal opinion was that these guns were bought as a sole batch while Beistegui Hermanos was trying to get rid of their stocked pistols for a much lower value than the Schnellfeuer (also bought in numbers down here).

The stock has the same attachment system copied from the standard C96 stock (yes, I tried). Unfortunately the iron latch on my pistol is broken and I'm planning to buy a reposition. I can take a picture of that for you on the weekend, if you want. As you are probaly aware, the Royal stock is longer to accomodate the barrel.

The stock is not in the best condition. It was found and bought by the previous owner from a completely different source - a thousand miles away from where the pistol was found. But again, given the rarity of these accessory, he bought it anyway.

Oh, and the price was around US$ 1,000.00 - a steal in my opinion. But, as I said the guy was leaving the hobby and really didn't need the money. But then I already knew that it worthed much more.

There is none that I'm aware.
The last Spanish copy that I knew was being offered was a Astra 900 with German markings.
And before that, in 2010, a Royal MM31 - but that one was fully auto.

I'll let you know if something new comes to light.
