Simpson's is offering this high grade postwar Mauser for 7K...catch is, they keep the grips! This makes no sense to me, as the elephant they came from is long dead, and they obviously BOUGHT the gun with the grips...

So any object that exists in the US made from ivory from now on can never be sold? Thats insane.....so then what DO they do with their unsellable ivory grips?

Was on the page as you typed......in the Governments' infinite wisdom, you can however go to Africa and SHOOT 2 elephants a year and bring the ivory back.

Welcome to the world of CITES regulations. It's a shame how many species are severely harmed by restrictions on LEGAL hunting. Unintended consequences...
Also, don't blame Simpsons, Ltd. Their business world would end at the mere allegation of CITES improprieties.

Just curious but I wonder if it would be possible to skirt the law by giving the grips, free gratis, to the person that buys this particular Luger, say as an incentive? After all, freebies are given all the time to those that purchase many other items?

That might work...but to suggest it in public gives it the jinx! Now the buyer will have P.E.T.A., the BATFE, and who knows else checking to see if the grips appear in the wrong hands!

That's a bloody shame to not get the grips with the pistol. There's something amazing about ivory (I have one of those old ivory scaled seven day straight razor sets) and something about a a Luger or Broomhandle merits the ivory.

Probably they refer to the dark grey color tone of this pistol. It looks like an old tarnished quarter coin.
