Trying to find value of many old holsters
Hey all, been a long time! Going through some of my late father's stuff and came across a few dozen old holsters. Most are easily recognizable - P38, Luger, 1911. But there are some odd ones too. I realize the best way for those is just to post the pics - so will do that in near future.
The main and secondary question I have is as follows: How to "clean up" old holsters? They have been laying unattended for quite a while now. Some few have some mildew and I desperately want to get rid of that without damaging the leather. Where can I find a resouce for holster markings? An online resource would be best as I am: a) lazy and b) space-poor for new books. I have so many books and daned little room for new ones. But if that is only recourse (besies telling you fine folks), so be it. Thanks all! |

George, Mildew can be brushed away for the most part or wiped off. I use an old soft bristle tooth brush and a rag. If the holster is dry it should come right off. I have sometimes used a VERY little saddle soap, moist brush or rag. If the holsters are stored in moist conditions it will return.
Sometimes it is not mildew at all but gunk or oil someone has put on the holster at one time leeching out. In this case it will feel oily to the touch. It's best to store holsters in dry dark conditions if possible. A resource for holster marking is pretty broad. I have thousands of dollars invested in books so don't know where you might look on the net for a good reference. Maybe one of our more savvy internet members knows. Actually basic holster markings are not at all complicated generally speaking. Untill you get to codes, GXY stuff like that, then you have to have a large book of codes and makers. I am looking to find a Sauer 38H and an Italian 1934/5 Beretta holster, Artillery's Navy's etc. Damaged holsters, parts...anything like that. Let me know if you have anything for sale...Thanks, Jerry Burney

Thanks Jerry! I'm sure if something came up, I might be able to work out some type of swap for Holster work
Sadly I'm in same boat for 38H. I have two and need at least one holster as well. But who knows - maybe I have two! |
