I recently was researching how to made my Mini-14 more accurate on the cheap. To that end, I found some information on cryogenic treatments. Essentially, for a rifle or pistol barrels this means freezing it down to -360 degrees F. and slowly bringing it back to room temperature under very controlled conditions. This process changes the molecular of the steel, making it purer and thus harder. Apparently, this process is being used with great success on racing engines and high speed cutting tools. For gun barrels, a cryro treatment greatly reduces the effects of heat generated by shooting, thereby improving a gun's accuracy by 15% to 35%. I was thinking that might be a excellent way to prolong the life of Luger shooters without visibly altering the appearance of the gun. Any opinions from the metalurgists out there? By the way, it is cheap. The going rate for cryo'ing a rifle barrel is $45.

If you decide to have this done. Make sure that you remove ALL springs. The freezing process tends to take the springyness out of the springs. Found this out the hard way.
