Recommend a book?

Can anyone with collecting experience recommend a good Luger book/reference I can buy to get my knowledge up to speed?

I realize there are some pricey references out there. Is there an entry level book (<$50) that will be useful?

The most comprehensive basic primer on Lugers is Charles Kenyon's "Lugers at Random" and it will usually cost around $60, but you may find it discounted somewhere. It gives a good overview of many of the Luger variations.

Greg, Kenyon is a good one, but it all depends on what you are looking for in a luger, as they covered so many era's, Imperial, Weimar and Nazi, besides the commerical guns.

Walters, the Luger Story is a good one for just reading and basic info, you can get a paperback one for less than $20. Walters other books are more specialized and would not recommend to a novice.

Best overall, I like Jan Still's books, but they are divided into seperate era's, so that is one reason you need to know which era you want.

Reeses books, well, the Test Luger is a good one to read, but the others, No.

there are two books that have a tiny bit of info, one by Dieter Marshal and the other by someone I can't remember....

I bought "Luger Tips" by Michael Reese for less than $20.00. It's a real basic book but it gave me a place to start. However, I quickly learned that the Still books are an excellent resource. I'm looking for one of those now.
I suspect that you will pick up something from all of them. My teacher used to say reading is good

Greg,

"Luger Tips" is hard to beat as your first Luger book. Brings you up to speed real quick--a basic "big picture" book. "Lugers at Random" is a "gotta have" book, no question. I have yet to get any of the Still books, although everyone tells me they are the best. Just like the guns, you can never have too many Luger books! Enjoy!

Another good one with a lot of info is Fred Datig's 'The Luger Pistol' history and development form 1894 to 1945. It's long out of print but copies pop up from time to time.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you... I have been out of town.

I currently have two copies of Lugers At Random.

Both are 1st editions, dated November 1969. One of them includes a ragged dust jacket, but both books are in good condition. Let me know if you want any of the books described above by Private Message or here on this thread.

Another group is the electronic books by Mr. Henrotin who made the animated drawing for the home page of this forum. They are about $9.00 each and have a lot of information. Go to the Links and Resources tab to the left. Just be sure to download them on the computer that you want to use to look at them. They are not tranferable from one computer to another.

Two copies of The Luger Pistol and One NEW hardcover copy of The Luger Story are still available at the prices mentioned above...

BTW, I also heartily recommend the ebooks by Gerard Henrotin... they are great for both beginners and advanced enthusiasts alike... My favorite is the one on the Luger Mechanicals... It completely explains what makes a Luger tick... fabulous drawings and explanations...
