Proof Mark number 40 in the Proof Mark section of this august list states that the M over A is a Mauser rework mark. I submit that this is not likely the case for the following reasons:
1.Simpson had the principal rework contract during this period; 2. The initials MA in official military documents of the period and previous (Wehrpassen, Ausweisen scheinen, and some text, indicate "Matrosen Abteilung" or "Sailor's section" and "Marine Artillerie" or Naval (Coastal) Artillery as accepted meanings for the MA abbreviation. Just thought I'd stir the pot for a change. Tom |

Under "Technical Information" pages, here on this forum, there is a list of proof marks commonly found on Luger pistols. If you scroll through them there is an M over an A that is #40 on the list.

Yes, I knew that, I just didn't understand what was meant by "august". I didn't know if it meant the month or the adjective.

I am assuming that since it is not capitalized that it is the adjective. The trouble with electronic communication is that you can't hear the quotation marks that most folks would use on the word "august". Adding the quotes might be mistaken for sarcasm (heaven forbid) so that is where mr.smilely-face comes in handy.

Well, now that you all have (correctly) interpreted the lower case "august", may we please move on to my original point?
I think that the explanation of that M over A marking (Not properly a proof mark in any event) is incorrect. Tom |

Tom,
It seems the M/A in the "proof mark" are more ornate than the standard navy proofing that I have seen. With the exception of the Crown/M marks on the 06's and the like, most navy markings are block letter stamps of simple design. Why would mauser, or anyone else, depart from that practice? FGR |
