Default Barrel number x82 or x83??

I have a byf 41. On the barrel, under the serial number I.D., is a three-didget number that ends in 83. Someone told me that this is a number related to the bore tolerances with the higher number representing tighter tolerances and a more accurate barrel? mm

mm,

The numbers are the actual gauging of the barrel lands and groove. I don't remember off hand what the allowable tolerances are without looking up the info at home, but I feel that any of the bore gauges are accurate enough that most people could not tell the difference. This practice was stopped in late 1941 and all the 1942 Lugers I have seen don't have the gauge stamp. Appearently, Mauser could hold the tolerance close enough that the Heereswaffenamt dropped this added check. Plus, the Luger was in the process of being dropped in favor of the P.38.

There's an exception to every rule. I have a 1942 byf with all matching original parts (#2XXXc) which has the gauge stamp. Probably was in the bottom of the parts bin.

The barrel gage stamp was deleted in 1942, and not at the end of 1941 production. Apparently the gage mark had not been entirely deleted by the c block.
