Default Here is the Gibson quote...

The Krieghoff Parabellum - R. Gibson Second Printing pp42 in reference to the plastic grips...

"...Both [grips] have two screw holes in the inside of of each grip, drilled and tapped to accept a grip screw. These holes were for the removal from the mold. Additionally, these holes conveniently serve to safeguard the screws from loss during disassembly. The grip screw is simply screwed into the back of the grip once it has been removed."..

A couple of interesting points..

First, to the question I asked above - it appears that Gibson believes these were tapped after molding...

Second - and to Patricks point that the threaded pin holes are a different size/thread - I wonder if Krieghoff grips are different then BYF grips, and HK grips are tapped while a BYF BW is not??

Now - I'll have to go home and strip the grips off an HK and a BW to see..!!!!

Default Threads!

Marvin! Upon closer examination, your theory seems to be very plausable as to why the holes are threaded.....when looking at them with a magnifying glass you can make out two details that would lead one to believe that they are cast in the grip! 1) the hole is flat bottomed with no visible sign of a bottoming tap ever touching the bottom, as you can see the virgin untouched plastic as it was cast! 2) The very bottom lead in thread, shows flow where it starts on the bottom flat and turns up......I looked at two sets of original grips, so four holes altogether....they all showed the same thread start. The rest of the continuing threads were mostly complete, with varying degrees of roughness.....Pretty neat! till...later....G.T.

This detective work is making my head spin, now if you can taste the bluing and give me a chemical analysis of the solution used I would appreciate it and carbon date it! You guys amaze me! Thor

Thanks for looking so quickly at the threads in the grips. I thought they would have been cast-in. This was probably done to help extract the checkered area from the mold because this mold design was probably difficult to remove by hand (mold temp was very hot) and the screw threads made it easy. Now, the operator had to "un-screw" the grip from the mold pin.

Ted, don't laugh, but tasting a pistol can sometimes detect the "copper" taste of cold bluing, just don't swallow, ha, ha

John I tried to put the grip screws in the holes on the back of the Krieghoff grips and they would not go. May be that the grip screws are different size on Mauser. T appreciate your reply on my Brown Widow Grips.
