According to your description, it could be a 1917 or 1922/23 Mauser Carbine. Does it have a removable magazine? Is the frame and stock one piece?

For your information, a 1917 carbine will have a hammer marked 'NS' whereas a 1922/23 Carbine has a very special hammer. Refer to my website hereunder(Secured Store) and take a look at the eleventh thumbnail on the calendar
