Roadkill,
Someone pulled a prank on your friend if he has an IH M1C. Unlike the M1D, the M1C was made from brand new Springfield receivers. The receivers were sent to Griffin & Howe while still in the white and not heat treated. G&H drilled and tapped the receivers, fitted and numbered the scope mount, and returned the receivers to Springfield for completion. The M1C will always be a Springfield and will fall into a serial range from late 1944 to mid 1945. The IHC was not built until early 1953.
