Where are all the Navy guys?

Hi, I'm a brand new member of this august group. I recently acquired a 1917 dated navy. If there is any information about it that you would like to know, please ask. On the other hand, what should I look for to determine authenticity and/or originality of individual parts, e.g. grips? Were grips on navies always numbered to the gun?
