The two points in the article that stand out in my reading are :

1. Rather than taking your first $ 2,000 and buying a collectible gun, one of the authors recommends buying $ 2,000 worth of books on gun collecting and guns in the area of your interest. (I think our 'sages' here on the LF have advised us beginners of this on numerous occasions...).

2. A discussion about the pros & cons of discussing in detail the fine-points of fakery and details of certain suprious guns. The upside of such discussions makes all collectors smarter. The downside of the same discussion alerts the fakers & boosters of the growing knowledge and increasing skill collectors gain in spotting not-legit pieces...which then, it is speculated, will only drive these "craftsmen" to make better pieces that are even harder to spot. The author then speculates to a day in which even the experts would not be able to detect such masterly-crafted pieces... (This scenario seems to be in-line with cautions Tom A. has posted, peviously, about not wanting to reveal (in public) too many details about boosted/faked Navy pieces he has run acorss...)

Great readings...nevertheless...!

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />
