I think you know the answer to your question already. There is no need to take the chance of damaging a numbered part on a collection-quality Luger when there are plenty of non-collection-quality guns out there to shoot.

If you want to shoot a Luger--and I highly recommend the activity, they are lot of fun--and can afford a second gun, find a mismatched or refinished Luger in 9mm and have at. I'm recommending 9mm because the ammunition is plentiful and cheap, as opposed to .30 Luger which is scarce and expensive.
