Default Thoughts on a Forum convention...

that's convention with a small "c". From time to time we all make postings which are misconstrued because you cannot convey intonation and meaning via this medium. Something said in jest or with playful sarcasm, can go horribly awry with feelings hurt all around.

I would like to propose that we RESERVE the use of the GRIN smiley for those postings in which we are being deliberberately antagonistic, playing the devil's advocate (are you paying attention Frank and John D.?) or needling someone in a well intentioned manner.

The addition of this smiley to the post (following the body of the post text. If only a subject line, then in the subject.) should alert the reader of the poster's attempt at humour or fun, because we cannot anticipate the reader's mood at the time of reading the post, and this will say loud and clear "No Offense Intended" or "This is not a serious comment"

I would be interested in your feedback, whether or not this idea has merit, or whether it is pedantic. Thanks. Dok

Sounds good to me. That's always been my intent when I've used the . It's meant to disarm and let the reader know that absolutely no harm or slight is intended, and that the writer is just trying to have some fun.

Since we can't see the 'glint' in someone's eye when they are deliberately jesting, then I would certainly agree with you. These little 'smileys' or emoticons were designed for just that. It is all too easy, without being able to read someones body language, to mistake a joke for a serious jab. Good idea!
