Question Off Topic..Comments welcome

Good Day Everyone,

I am looking for some words of wisdom here...

On top of being the proud owner of a Luger, I also collect other handguns (S&W, Ruger, Beretta, Vostok...ect).

I am contemplating acquiring a Sig P226 9mm. Even though I have done my homework and gathered info from various sources, I have never actually fired or owned a Sig Sauer firearm and was wondering if any of you owned one (or used one before) and would care to comment on them.

I've read all the good stuff on the SIGARMS site and the various review on this apparently excellent pistol..yadi yadi yada.. except I would be delighted to hear from anyone from this forum before I make a call and buy myself a birhtday present

For exemple, I read that some models (pre-1998) had a problem with the trigger bar spring (they apparently eat the frame near the magazine release button backplate and break a lot)

Anything else I should be worried about??

ANY comments welcome and thanks a lot in advance

BTW I didn't mean to annoy anyone with this query, it's just that THIS is THE place to get intelligent answers from people who "know"

Cheers

Marc, I own and shoot a Sip P2340, the mid size .40 cal and love the gun although I am not much into plastic. However, I do have a gun smithing business, I see from time to time a few small parts break on Sigs as I do anything else, mostly the $1.50 rebound spring. Sig has a strict, I believe $25.00 min order with a min. $10 shipping charge. This get pricy when all you wanted was a small part. Check this out, your next part from Sig could be min $35.00.

Tac, Thank you for correcting my spelling, there is just no way that I can express my love of the british. They have led the way for firearms ownership, gee for what, 200 years that our history book tell of. When a small part breaks, and it happens, yes seldom but happens, you order will be min. $35.00. Not so with Colt, Remington, Browning.....

I had a 229. Excellent pistol!, it would shoot the hot +p+ loads. I gave a Deputy some of my ammo and he destroyed his Berreta with less than 14 shots. The Sheriff's Dept. requested info about my ammo and I gave them an empty box.

Question

Interesting...

There's no way I'll put +p+ loads in my Beretta 92FS (actually, they specify in the owner's manual that military or sub machine gun ammo isn't recommended).

Will the P226 desintegrate if you put this millitary grade (SMG) 9mm through it??

Cheers

As a military small arms instructor, I had access to tons of mostly 9mm IMI sub gun ammo. I just saved it for the Uzi's, why take a chance when so much good quality ammo is available?. I would never run such hot loads through any of my 9mm's handguns...BTW I love hunting BC.

I totally agree with you Howard, on the IMI stuff and also on the hunting around here..

I was just asking because I got tons of the darn IMI stuff and no one will take it!! (UZIs are hard to find, even harder to possess legally in Canada )

Thanks for the reply

Marc, I think I will be doing black bear in the spring and moose/wolf in the fall. This will be in the PG area, where are you located?

Howard,

I live in the Queen Charlotte Islands. There's lots of black bears and deers around but no wolfs or moose. There's so much deers around that it's not even funny!! The bag limit is 2 and the year limit is 10.

Between hunting bambies and pulling out 75 pounds king salmonds/halibuts, I try to keep busy by going to the range

Oh well, life on the island is so hard !!!

If you ever come this way, let me know...

Hello Marc, Hermit & everybody....

Just back from a deer hunt...deer: 1 / us: 0...and we froze ourselves at -15 degrees with a foot of snow....

As for the P226 question I'd say it's a good piece that can compare to most modern pistols. Ergonomics are very good & pointability is excellent....used to carry one....

I've used ( as service pieces ) SIGs P226, P229, Berettas 96D 40 cal & my actual WALTHER P99. Also a Glock 19....ALL EXCELLENT PISTOLS....

It's mostly a matter of personnal feel....

Welcome back kidvett,

Sorry to hear about your hunting trip...-15!!! How far north did you go??

Anyhow, I decided not to buy the P226. When I called the seller, I found out that the gun was an early model, had 2 hi-capacity magazines (15 rnds) and to top it all, the guy didn't know what a de-cocking lever was!!! And he wanted $750 cdn for it Not such a good deal after all since I would have to buy 2 mags (after market $42 each+taxes+shipping OR factory new $83 each+taxes+shipping!!). I could also try to cannibalize (read modify) the 2 hi-caps except that would probably end-up screwing around with them for a few days and after ruining them, I'd end up throwing them out and buying 2 new ones anyway

** For our southern neighbours: hi cap-mags are prohibited in Canada

Since the gun is pre 1993, I find difficult to believe that he only put 1000 rnds through it (the guy is also selling a mini 14 that look likes it's from a science fiction movies with 30 rnds mags)

Anyway, enough blabla!!

Thanks to all for the wise and useful replies

Take care and
