Question New Replacement Luger Barrels

New Replacement Luger Barrels,

Has anyone had experience, good or bad, w/ these products from Gun Parts Corp. in West Hurley, NY? (Yes, formerly Numrich arms many years ago, etc.).

Was told via phone that these are USA made, I certainly don't want Korean mfg. on MY Luger.

Anyone familiar w/ putting a new tube on, please respond. I want a 6" bbl. on a P.08 to shoot.

Welcome to the Lugerforum Keith.

Do a search on replacement barrels and you should find a wealth of information. Changing barrels on a Luger requires very special tools to prevent damage to the receiver and is not for the feint hearted.

Two forum members that can successfully perform barrel surgery are Lugerdoc (Tom Heller) and Hugh Clark. There may be others, but these two are at the top of my failing memory...

Do a search on their names and you should find the information you are looking for. If not, come back to this thread and post again.

I have re-barreled a few Lugers with Gun Parts Inc barrels. As too where these barrels are made it is anyones guess, none have an import mark that I have seen, however all fitted well, but all needed a bit taken off the shoulder too line the front sight up, and I recut each chamber too headspace. As best I can describe, they are a bit better in the chambers then some of the East German imports I had here that would not even chamber a round until recut.

Hello Keith,

You might want to look at this Bohler-Stahl barrel that is on e-Bay auction right now :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...5&category=383

Bohler-Stahl was an Austrian steel maker around the time of the start of WWI and supplied barrel steel to DWM for barrels...

Regards,

Pete...

I recently rebarreled a Luger with a 6" from Numrich. I had to trim the shoulder just a bit to line up the sight. I dont know if they are all this way, but mine seemed to be short chambered, a good thing. I was able to finish ream the chamber and get a perfect headspace. The fitting process does take extreme care and patience, but I did not find it difficult. I have not had time to take it to the range yet, so I dont know how accurate it will be. Probably better than I can shoot.

Question

Numrich barrels seem to be a hit or miss proposition. I have used several of their 4" & 6" bbls. The 9mm ones I got a couple of years ago fit very well. Lately quality control seems to have slipped a bit and you may get one that does not have the extractor cut lined up properly with the front sight ramp. One had to be returned because it was so far out of alignment. Their 30 cal bbls must be old stock because they have all been of superb quality!

Tom Heller may have a few of the Mentor Arms bbls from the 60's left that are of bettor quality than the present 9mm Numrich bbls.

SARCO also has bbls, I don't know if they are from the same supplier as Numrich's or not, I haven't had any experience with them.

I have been able to collect a few new "Made in Germany" 4" 9mm bbls that are equal to the originals, I have no idea of the age of these bbls.

Hello Pete Ebbink & thanks very much for the ebay tip. I was there, as Kilroy said.

"I just won the auction on that Bohler-Stahl barrel on Ebay" - Packet

Packet, you sneaky snake - so did I, you sniper!
Pleased to meet you.

Thank you, John Sabato for welcoming me to this forum, I am amazed there are only 1280 members. Thought it'd be more like 12,000.

Hope you can handle a little humor here folks, but I sure don't mean to flame anyone for real. 'Packet' included. In fact that no flame policy should be enacted @ recguns, where folks get really nasty & aloof, not good for the gun community or our solidarity, but then this 'gun culture' always has attracted the worst sort of puffed up, overgrown bully boys as well as the best specimens of Americana.

I read all your posts & when I have more time will follow up on your suggestions. Am in the market only for a 6" tube in 9mm.

Have a Sowjet Russland import, w/ a really heavy trigger spring that I'd like to lighten up. Then place that 150mm tube on it ...

OR...

install it on a Mauser Parabellum Swiss 4" model. The latter has a great trigger & is really accurate to boot. Just have a major woody for the 150mm tubes & the longer sight radius.

Thank you all again for making me feel welcome to your group.

Heil Gruppe - Hoch! Hoch! Hoch!

Welcome Keith, you can see the area I live in, so we are almost neighbors! I had a 6 inch barrel that I traded, but really liked it. That is about the best length for a Luger, although a five inch is probably perfect!!

Hello Edward Tinker,

We are indeed, I am in Western Pinko WA. Land of Locke - in case you tought Moe of the Three Stooges was Dead, he isn't. He's our gov! IMHO, the 4.75" pistols look well proportioned, methinks. And 5" WOULD be ideal, but the older I get, the better a long sight radius looks to me.

Can you recommend a Luger guru IN WA state? I'd like to save on shipping costs. Need to discuss prof. installation & costs for the 6" pipe, when found.

Nope, can't help you with a good gunsmith in WA state, but haven't had the "need" either...

As others have said, there are barrels a-plenty floating around, it is knowing which ones are good ones that makes it hard to judge.

Gruger, The bad news is that I'm currently out of 9x150mm Mentor barrels and the worst news is that I don't, install the GPC barrels, because like Hugh, I've found that all of them are short chambered and most have the front sight base and extractor cut out of alinement. TH

I almost forgot to add that none of the currently available replacement barrels will fit on your Mauser Parabellum, as these have an 1/8" longer thread receiver and require a similar barrel. I've been trying to get a few of these out of German, but they are very expensive and the German dealer require import permits for these. Hugh, I agree that the "Made in Germany" marked 9x100mm barrels are excellent. I purchased all of Fed Ord's remaining stock of these when they went out of business. TH

Lugerdoc, I must have been lucky as my GPC barrel extractor cut was alligned with the sight. Maybe I misread your post, but it seemed like you were implying that the short chamber was also a problem. Please explain.

Packet, I've reamed many chambers to get the correct headspacing, but it's just an extra step, that I generally did not have to do with the Mentor Arms barrels. TH
