Post What does the S/42 mean????

I am new to the Luger forum but I have wanted a luger for a while now. I have been watching the gun auction sites for a shooter in my price range, but have not had any luck. I joined this forum about a week ago and heard about Mr. Shattuck, and my Mauser 1937 S/42 with all original finish will be here this coming Tuesday. I wanted a shooter and wanted to buy from a reputable dealer, he is one nice guy to talk to, but what does the S/42 mean??????

After WW1 and then the Nazi's started to re-arm, and to prevent the allies to figure out how many guns and by whom were being made, they had codes for the guns.

So the following are all Mauser made:

S/42
42
