Hi Brew,
Welcome to the forum.
My first military surplus weapon was a .303 Enfiled No. 4 Mk.1 sniper version for which I paid $17.95 at the Dixie Jobbing House, on Poplar Street, in Macon Georgia in 1959.
Subsequent to that, I have seen several Enfields marked as indicated. After taking a few apart, I decided that these were cuts that were made at stress points and were done to determine the relative soundness of the wood.
Ian Skinnerton is the unquestioned authority on SMLE rifles; reccomend you do a "Google" on him and check it out.
Tom A.
PS. is almost nothing in the world that kicks worse than a .303 on a Martini carbine. It is brutal.
