Morgan, On any luger that is to be shot I'd definately first check the rear of the breech block to be sure that it is not damaged, as this is an expensive part to replace and would cause an otherwise matching luger, to become a mismatch. TH

Look at the back of the frame just under the toggle. When fired the rear edge of the rear toggle link will stike the frame and leave an indentation. The indentation will grow with use. The indentation is harmless and normal, but it's a pretty good indication of milage.

Hi,

I bought a mint (rebuilt and saltdip blued) shooter grade S/42 for sports shooting purposes. Have fired it regularly over a period of a year now, with some 100+ rounds a week and I decided to closely watch it's wear patterns.

The wear patterns after 1000 rounds of 124Gr S&B:
-Slight blue wear on the right receiver side, where the trigger lever meets with the receiver.
-Slight blue wear on the back of the frame where the toggle meets the frame (front of the ears and back of the frame).
-Slight markings on receiver and frame rail.
-No distortion of any parts whatsoever.
-No visible wear on barrel, chamber and barrel lining.
-One broken (aftermarket) ejector (side)spring after only 300 rounds. Replaced it with an original one, no problems after 700 rounds.

This certainly helped me to estimate the functional life of a Luger. (Loooong )
