Post How to remove pitting?

How do I remove pitting from the grip-strap on an 1912 Erfurt P-08?
The gripstrap, both front and back, on one of my Erfurts is a bit pitted. However it does not look like it runs deep in the steel, it looks like it's on the surface.

P. Ristan, What have you tried so far? Have you rubbed it with very fine steel wool and oil? If all the rust is removed you can see what you are dealing with.

If you have done this and it is genuinely pitted there is little you can do outside of welding up the pits and grinding them down again. This is major restoration and cost prohibitive in most cases.

Thanks.
Removed the pitting with fine steel wool.
The rust did not go down into the steel.
