Injury to insult

Anyone out there who can put a front sight on a 1911A1? I picked up a used Auto Ordnance last week for a boat/camping gun, function and accuracy is excellent but the front sight came off today. That was bad but worse was it cut a 1" gash dead center of my forehead. Thanks

hmmm, I seem to remember that they popped off or were loose when we used them in the amry. I thought we just added locktite to them, but could be remembering wrong...

Hi Russ! beleve it or not....I miss the snow.. only when I can play in it.. BUT, if you have to work in it..it's pretty tough.. AZ has been good to me, in every aspect.. On the other hand.. Turn the slide with the sight in place, up side down on a hard surface. with a sharpened pin punch, create two to three craters in the bottom of the sight, spreading it out until it fill the under cut in the slide, locktite will be of no use....just good large craters until the sight is tight on....and you save on postage...

The front sight on a Colt 1911A1 is staked on. You can use a drift to re-stake unless the leg is broken off, in which case, you'll need a new front sight with a new tenon. The factory used a "V" crimp tool, which spread the tenon at the base. After that, it was smoothed for the bushing to fit without interference.

Kimber, Dan Wesson, STI and a few others have used a larger tenon on the front sight - or a bevel cut in the front of the slide over the past few years (which is pinned without a tenon), but they vary on the machine cut.

As well - a few custom manufacturers (Wilson, Baer, etc.) have experimented with a crimp and dual-crimp front sight - ala MMC design. You can see what those "crimped designs are, as the front sight will have a "round hole" as the stake-in point - rather then a "slot". As well - the tenon will differ depending on model and sight height.

Been there, done that. Silver solder it on or get a dovetail front sight from Brownells.

I haven't looked at their web site for a while, but I believe Brownell's carries a special jig for staking original type M1911A1 front sights... They have to be staked exactly right (or silver soldered) or the WILL work themselves loose. I had made one a couple of decades ago when actively gunsmithing and shooting 1911's, but lost it somewhere along the way... One staked in place, then the inside of the slide is smoothed up to make sure there is no interference with the barrel bushing.
