The infernal left grip chip!
I always thought that the chunk broken out beneath the safty lever was a disassembly problem. Apparently not so. I went and fired 4 mags through my Mauser 42 just to celebrate a marvelous day, and lost the blasted chunk out of my upper rear left grip, Double Rats! I was in rough terrain and couldn't find the missing piece. Really no big deal as these are $19 repro. walnut grips, and they did survive 200-250 shots(don't worry the guns a Mauser Frankenstien). Poor Stevie can't decide whether to take Thor's advice and get some Nill's grips, or another set of these cheapo's(these were pretty grips).
Oh well, no big moral to the story, I just had no idea the grips could let loose from simply shooting the gun. Maybe some of the broken left original grips were honest failure, and not removal abuse. Still and Outstanding day,... Stevie |

My sister-in-law taught high school drama/speech in Kingfisher, OK in the mid-70's.

Stevie,
Fearing the same kind of problem, I bought two sets of East German VOPO plastic grips @ $12.00 each. They are an excellent fit and are unbreakable. I change out my wood grips for these when I go to the range. Luke

Hi Stevie.!
E-mail Hugh Clark for his mailing address - and send your grip down there... I had the *exact same thing* happen on one of my 1920 Commercial's - and Hugh did a fantastic job repairing mine.. As well - the suggestions for shooting with a replacement set are well founded, for sure!!! |

Wes? What was your sister in law's last name at that time, I may remember her? I graduated in 81.
Back to the subject at hand, I have thought about it and decided to put a set of repro. Black widow style grips on my faithful Mauser. I believe these would be appropriate for a 42-42 Mauser, mismatch or not. Does anyone have any advice on obtaining some grips of this type? Thanx, Stevie. |
