1937, S/42

This is my one and only Luger maybe you all can tell me more about it. 1937 on the chamber, S/42 on the toggle link, the last 2 digits of the SN are on all the small parts, 2 eagle 0ver 63 acceptance marks on the left side and an eagle without anything else. On the bottom of the barrel is the SN and under it what looks like 8,82. Mag is numbered 1383 and the extra mag is numbered 8289. The pistol is probably 95%+

Hi John,
Impossible to tell you anything about your Luger WITH-OUT INCLUDING THE SERIAL NUMBER AND SUFFIX. There are at least 5 different variations of the 1937 S/42 military Luger. A high production Luger is about all one can share with you without more information.

Bill said there are 5 variations of 1937 Mauser. I can only think of 4:

1st variation with rust blue finish and strawed small parts (trigger, safety, mag release, take down lever,

2nd variation with all blued small parts,

police with sear safety,

and Kriegsmarine with identifying property marks starting with either "N" or "O".

Do any of these 4 describe your 1937 Mauser Luger?

The one I have seems to be the 2nd variation with all blued parts. There is no SN suffix that I can see.

Lugers were made in batches of 9999 (some experts say 10,000 and that is another thread), so you will find them marked with numbering such as:
1630
or
3 c
123
2578 c
9762 f
etc., so to give you any indication of when your Luger was made, a serial number or close to it needs to be given.

If under the barrel it is marked 5476 and just under it is a y, then the serial number is 5476y. If you feel that giving out the serial number is a violation of your privacy, you can get the number fairly clsoe by staing 54xx y. Without a serial number or as you stated no suffix, then it was made in the grouping later in the year.

3rd Reich Lugers book states: there were numbering of 1937 S/42 of 4500p through 400b, with a total of 126,000 Lugers made that year.

(1936 S/42's continued their number until the p block, and 1937 continued onward).

Hi,
First you have a strawed gun with droop eagle 63's without a hump.

Then a strawed gun with droop 63's and a hump.

Then a strawed gun with droop 63's and a hump but with a combination of rust blued parts and salt blued parts.

Then all blued with droop eagle 63's.

Then all blued with a combination of one droop and one straight eagle 63.

Then all blued with straight eagle 63's.

Then the Navy and police variations.

Hi Bill,

I didn't realize there was so much variety in the 1937 series. I had assumed the Mauser and blued small parts both came in exactly with the 2nd variation. I had no clue some 1937s with the hump have strawed small parts. Thanks for teaching me. I'll definitely add these details to my Mauser notebook. THANKS!

You just have to enjoy collecting lugers with the variety of guns out there. 1911s are boring by comparison. Lugers are cool!
