Thai is a tonal language.
Depending on pronunciation Kwai can mean 'river' or 'buffalo' (water buffalo)
As pronounced for the movie Kwai means buffalo
Thai's think this is crazy - who would build a bridge over a buffalo, just move the buffalo.
But the other pronunciation "Bridge over the river River" makes no sense either.

But have to love the "Colonel Bogey March"
We used to sing that during training

"Hitler, had only one big ball
Rommel, had two but rather small
Himmler, had something similar
But poor old Goebbels
Had no balls
at all"
