Post Help with S42 40 date ...

I need some advice on a S42 luger, '40 dated. It's all matching, in really great shape, perhaps 96-97% original finish. Black "police " holster,(really nice) w/ two mags. The mags match each other but not the pistol. Even has a waffenampt tool. I just need a ballpark figure on what a setup like this is bringing in good old US dollars nowadays. This will be my first luger, and this is my first post on this forum. Thanks for the help!

Hi Howard, welcome to the Luger Forum. 1940 Lugers should be marked with a "42" not an "S/42". If you have not made an error and are looking for a collectable, turn around and run the other way. This pistol is made up from parts of at least two Lugers. Look at the magazines. Are they stamped 2/1001 on the side. These are post war East German Manufacturered pieces.

Good Luck!!

My Bad! Its "42", not "S42". The mags match each other, 4 digits stamped in the bottom, I believe the holster and mags were added to the pistol later.

OK Howard, that sounds better. Now make sure that ALL the parts that are numbered, match. That includes the internal parts, as well as the external parts. The internal parts the are numbered are the trigger, grips, main toggle link pin, hold open lever, breech block and firing pin.

If you are convinced the Luger is all matched and 97% I would go $900 to $1000 for just the pistol. Maybe a little more if you really want it. One magazine should come with the pistol, the other is worth about $85 or so. The holster in excellent condition could go for $250 and the tool $50 to $125 depending in the markings.

This should give you something to work with!!

Good Luck

Frank, thats the kind of help I was hoping for! My collecting focus has been US weapons for many years, So I really don't know squat about Lugers. I'll pick it up next weekend, maybe I can post some pics of it then. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
