I have removed broad but shallow pitting on my DWM mixmaster shooter by hand-stoning the affected parts using water stones, one stroke at a time. I worked on my shooter's frame, receiver and barrel very carefully over a period of weeks.

Deeper pits are welded, typically via TIG process, using electrode/rod specifically formulated for this work. Available through Brownell's in Iowa.
