Hi Luger1, the dust cover was just that, a cover to keep mud and dirt and other stuff you might run into when fighting for your life! It could be removed easily and you then at least had the feed part of the magazine free of the contaminants mentioned above... As the drum was developed initially for the Luger, it was designed to insert into the grip and rest down against the mag catch. When used on an MP18 machine gun, it had no provision to keep the drum from going to far into the mag well on the machine gun, hence with out the spacer to stop it, it would insert too far and the bolt on the machine gun would pound the hell out of it, rendering it useless? I've repaired several that shows this result... The spacer was just a small sheet metal sleeve that slides over the mag tube, and with it, you can run an MP18, without it, a Luger...
