Why do bakers need rifles?
Well, I suspect that they were first up in the morning, and (detecting an infiltration by the enemy) it would take just one rifle shot to wake up the rest of the camp... That, and perhaps their bread wasn't quite up to snuff and they needed some form of self defense?
