According to Buxton's Vol 3, they carried a variety of P38s post WW2. I'm not sure what they are using now. Tom H.

I think the answer to this question should be found in the current release of Janes' Infantry Weapons reference... anyone spend any time in their local library?

All I could find was that they used the FN HP35 and the P1 (post WW2 P-38) after the war and is believed to still be using, but the rest of the information is in Portuguese and I'm a bit rusty....

When did the Portuguese stop using the Lugers they purchased from Germany in 1943? I bought one of the rigs that Bob Adams has for sale and they are really nice with the phosphate finish. I wondered when these went into reserve with Portugal and thought one of you guys may know.

Marvin (HEY!), I just don't know, would be interesting to hear how and when?
The little I read on the internet, said that the P38, then the P1? So I just don't know. Very little post war info out there, guess we should write a book on it.

Thanks for the information on what Portugal is currently using.
Just as speculation, if Portugal has the P-1, FN35 and the H&K in stock, the H&K seems to be the newest. IF this is the case, the P-1 and the FN35 are the older of the three and would be the reserve pistols. The FN35 may have been replaced by the P-1 in the 1960s after the German contracts were fulfilled and then replaced by the H&K. If any of the above happens to be correct, I would suppose that the Lugers may have been replaced in service in the mid to late 1950s, and stored as reserves. I seem to remember that they were released to the market in the early 1980s; probably when the H&K pistol was issued. This is all pure speculation and just random thoughts ONLY. DO NOT take any of the above as fact, it is just rambling thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!! Marvin |
