Back in '71 I was MedEvaced back to CONUS. Toward the end of the flight, my C9 made a stop in a blacked-out base, at night, with tight security {AP's} to keep us from even knowing the name of the base. (No signs, no unit patches). It had black 4-engine aircraft but I couldn't say what they were. We were led to a building with a long corridor lined on both sides with those old pay phones [rotary dial, coin operated]. We were told any calls we made were free.

Might have been in Alaska...The AirEvac C9 stopped at every island, atoll, and coral reef in the Pacific and ended up in Northern California before dropping down into the real USA (and continuing to the East Coast).

Might have been a base in Alaska...Or the Aleutians...
