On Page 204, Jan has a list of Navy marked Weimar lugers, of these some 30 are Navy marked artilleries. I have added a couple more from observation.

Mine is a 1917/1920 N 1303:

Bill is asking about the backstrap 3's on Don's Luger. They're different.

Yes, Bill- the Navy backstrap marking is etched and was applied some 10 to 15 years after the luger was made.

Navy gripstrap markings were applied by several navy entities, Nordsee and Ostsee on these artillery models, Wilhelmshaven and Kiel on earlier ones during WWI, and maybe others.

When you say etched, you mean like a pantograph? And maybe the armorer had to use two different font 3's because a set only has one?

Or because the original rack number was 30 and the later armory added the 1 and second 3?

It's always interesting to poke around in threads I don't have a Luger for...

Its definitely 100% legit. This was the late Weimer period and they were slapping pieces together with whatever they had left over from years of war! Different parts, dies and etc scrapped together!. These weren't Kreighoffs~They were desperate and the last thing they would be concerned with would be perfect proofs! Common sense my friend~ Its real and a valuable piece of proud German Weimar History~

The back strap markings are pantographed. On a curved surface it is difficult to get the cutting tip to contact the surface consistently. The shape of the 3s appear generally to be the same, it is just that the left side of the first 3 is cut shallow/incomplete. Just my opinion.
