Buy or Pass?

Luger in a Pawn shop with a holster and 2 mags 1938 S/42 serial 13XXh, 70-80%, unit marked on frame. Holster is Dresden 1918 and it has some loose stiching but all there. Mags are wood bottomed but don't match. $850 otd firm.

Darryl, it is an in-between.

Look at it this way;

Shooter Luger $450 - $500, go with $500 (and the price for shooters is usually a bit more than that)

Holster, loose stictching, depends on how bad, say $75 - $100, on e-bay they go for that to a bit more, depending on condition.

Extra magazine wood base $85

So that adds up to $500 + $100 + $85 for a total of $685, and if you up the gun from the $500 to $600 or $650 (you have to be the judge of how orginal and the shape it is in), then that brings it up to $785, to almost what the price they are asking.

Seems a bit high, but not horrible, depends on how bad you want it?

Yeah. I have a big show coming up and may just hold on to my money till then. All the metal numbers appeared to match on it. Bore was good. The unit marking is O.3199, what does that stand for? Also both mags are different from any I've seen. They have what looks like bullseyes instead of dished area on each side of the wood like on my friend's 1917 DWM.

Darth......that Luger is a Navy marked item.....actually quite a scarce Luger and probaly worth more than the asking price....the serial number and gripstrap markings correspond to Navy Lugers in Stills book on 3 Reich Lugers..interesting find!!!.....Peter..(the mags may be ww1 Navy)...also rare items!!!!!

I responded to your message on the "other" forum. The gun is a Weimar or early Nazi Kriegsmarine piece (Ostsee). The magazines sound like WWI Navy as lugercollector has pointed out. In good shape and original, they are worth at least $150 each. If the gun hasn't been messed with, looks like you have made a decent find.

personally, I think you got a good find. I would take it. I can't see all of the gun for some reason but what I can see looks pretty good and looks better than the 70-80% that you said. I doesn't look messed with. Also personaly, I don't consider that simply because a magazine has concentric circles that it is a navy magazine. I don't consider a magazine a navy mag unless it has "C/M" stamped on it. But thats just my opinion. Others may disagree. The holster is added value. But I can not see the holster in the pics. If you choose to doll up the holster to original, don't just take it to just any shoemaker. Send it to Jerry. He has magic fingers and knowledge of the holsters history.

Yes, those are Navy Magazines. The concentric rings and the large serial numbers going sideways. If they are not, what are they?

Here's a pic of the holster and makers marking, no other markings are on it.
The pics do make the gun look a little better than I think it is. I try to be conservative in grading condition and it may go 80% but definitely not 90%. Also included is pic of the other side of the mag bottoms showing some damage to one. Also I notice one mag body has a silver tone and the other a golden tone, why is that?

Darth, The one with the golden tone is nickle plated. As nickle ages it gets a golden patina.

Are there any other markings in the wood of the mags other than the serial numbers?It dosen't look like it from the photo's. The damage on the one mag drops it in value a little but you still got a smokin deal. I wish to have the same luck someday soon! Jerry Burney
