Great to see the timeless design of the Parabellum in a new role, literally. Han Solo's blaster in the original was based on a C96.

Existing machines suggest intricate design/realism and it is often easier for the art department to modify an existing machine than create a new one from scratch. Many other Star Wars weapons are based on existing firearms.

In the iconic Sci-Fi Film Aliens, H&K VP70s pistols were used unaltered. Also in Aliens, when the Colonial Marines awaken from hyper sleep, the machines in the scene background are surplus helicopter engines. The colony interior was an abandoned UK power plant.
