Yes - the use of multiple horizontal columns forced usage of the horizontal (landscape) orientation for pages. They are designed to print one or two sided, with the binding along the long top edge.
The document is actually a set of long multi-cell tables with the data inside table cells. Flow control is automatic when building content and exporting the document to PDF format. I don't know how different printer drivers would deal with this if you attempt to override it. Each one may deal with it differently, depending of whether you have a "fill the page" option.
