Default Care to tell me what it's worth? Trying new pics:)

Wow, can't believe I last looked at this gun over two years ago when I last posted about it, but my uncle want's to buy this gun now to help my mom out a bit, so I thought I'd take a few pics and post them up and see what's changed over the past two years.

Here's the sheet I filled out on it then:
Toggle inscprition byf
Chamber 42
Toggle know- I'm unsure, hopefully pic will suffice
No grip safety
Cal 9mm
Grips look wood, but "sound" like plastic when tapped on with clip out...feel like wood, but unsure.
Safety is on in rear position
Barrel measures a scooch over 3 1/8th inch
Rear sight is fixed, front adjustable
Mag plug is wood, number is 2901 and what appears to be a cross "+" well below it, and just under has annother insignia...sorta looking like a cursive lower cased "L", which also similarly appears under the 4449 on the frame, under the barrel.
Blueing wear in the action, holster wear in front of the barrel.
Blueing wear (from holster I suppose) on the protruding piece behind the take down lever.

No accessories.

Excellent bore.

And here's some pics:

Thanks

edit:
Epic fail on the pics

Looks like a nice byf 42 Mauser.

Do you have specific questions about it?

There are still a lot of unknowns, such as do the internals all match, any signs of re-blue, etc, that just can't be determined from the photos. And we know that the magazine is wrong. If I were buying that gun locally I'd want to be in around $1500. A couple hundred more isn't out of line on a retail level, but given the unknowns that's as far out on that limb as I dare go.
You can look on Simpson, Ltd. and do some comparison shopping, but remember that they have to keep the lights on.

I think it is admirable that your uncle wants to help out your mom. Tell him $1,200 for the Luger, another $200 for the magazine, and if you have a holster for it, another $200.

I'm an uncle six times over, you can trust my judgement, even if I can't see your pictures because they're on an off-site storage location that my ISP blocks.

...And another $75 for a stamped loading tool. $50 for a cleaning rod.

...$25 for bringback papers with correct serial and relation to family.

@DavidJay
All the numbers that can be seen do match, I'm sure it hasn't been re-blued, as my Folks got it in the early 60's.

I did look at Simpsons, they only have one BYF 42, listed at $2495.00, but it also says "Rig, includes an original leather holster, dyed black, proofed on the back eagle/WaA145 next to a date which appears to be 1977?. Also includes an original unmarked takedown tool and an extra magazine, an unmarked wood bottom variation.

Also it notes 85% wear and "fair bore".

Dang, I thought I'd see several listed to get an educated guess

we host pictures here, NOT photobucket

A byf goes for a bit more than some other lugers, although I see folks quoted to you in 2014. I would say values have not changed that much, although if you add up the bits it probably goes for about what he stated.

And having it since the 60's is not a guarantee of not being reblued, since the war ended in 1945 - so in 15 years, who knows.

I would say, high retail its around what Simpson's had it listed for, also check out Legacy Collectables, he has byf's almost all the time. Anyway, retail is always more, to family I would expect less, unless Uncle is well off. But if hes a working guy, I would think that Sheepherder is about right to family prices.

Many of the more knowledgeable members here work for government or corporate entities which provide them with computers/laptops and also broadband Internet access as part of their workplace tools, free of charge. To maximize efficiency, they block access to social media sites such as Photobucket, TinyPic, SmugMug, Twitter, FaceBook, Japanese pr0n sites, auction sites, streaming video, IMDB, among countless others.

These are the people that you want to answer your questions. They're not only knowledgeable, they own hundreds of Lugers. I don't mean all together; I have seen pictures here of individual long time members with literally hundreds of Lugers. They study Lugers, buy/sell Lugers, ignore their wives to spend time with their Lugers, write books about Lugers, have specialized websites detailing, explaining, and displaying Lugers.

They would be agreeable to helping you or answering your questions...If they could see what it is you are asking.

Off site picture storage facilities change their formats, re-organize their sites, change service providers, and sometimes just disappear. Any pics stored there can be easily lost to future members here Searching for the same answers you are.

Here's a recent post from a Moderator here, and a pic illustrating why you should attach pics, not link them. -

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Attach your photos directly to your post by using the "Go Advance" button to make your post entry. Then there is a "manage attachments" button to allow you to post your photos.

Photos that are hosted elsewhere, often disappear when the hosting website reorganizes its holdings, or goes out of business.

In addition, many of the more knowledgeable people on this forum are unable to see your photos posted elsewhere because they access the forum from their place of employment where internet web storage sites are filtered or prohibited. If they can't see your photos, they can't offer comments or advice.

Thanks, and welcome to the Lugerforum.

If you want more input, post the pictures here on our server.

I will not look at photobucket, neither will others as Sheepherder points out.

Mike

Uploading pictures from your pc is not difficult at all, but the most important thing is that you be able to take close up pictures preferably in natural light on an overcast day.

this new contract I have, is the first one that has been as 'strict' on what I can or can't see {websites} as I work in IT Security and lots of companies restrict more sites. It is not necessarily the company or department itself, but they buy a product and there is a listing of what they consider inappropriate sites - guns, gambling, booze, sex - all the fun sites are blocked.

Regrading whether it been re-blued or not, I just spoke to my mom, she did the trade in 1967 with the guy who brought it back from WW2, she's trying to recall his name, but he was in his 50's, she was right at about 30 years old, seems she traded this (with dad's consent ofcourse) for some type of Baretta he had bought for her.

My Dad ran a clip through it with the neighbor, and it's been put away ever since.

So, looking at the blue wear on it, I'd find it hard to see it was reblued after WW2, then worn to the points that can be seen in the pics, I've had had guns that were re-blued, some good, some bad...lol, and they always look more "black", than bluing does, but then again, I'm just comparing to the old Winchesters, Remingtons and stuff I know about, not a Luger.

Anyway, my Uncle does not have super deep pockets, but did say he was not against paying close to "retail"although I would not ask him of that) in order to help my mom out

So if you were a private party buyer, what would you think would be a price?

If you saw this gun in a gunshop, what would you think the gunshop would ask for it?

I figure to split the difference for him.

Thanks again...

And hey, uploading pics here ain't too bad

Happy Fathers Day all!

Hi, It's hard to see detail in your photos due to either focus or camera shake issues. That said, it's likely it is a 42 date Mauser Luger in original finish. The magazine does not look original to the gun, and is probably after-market. In the case of this pistol, a proper bakelite base FXO E/37 magazine is worth about $225, so that must be taken into consideration.

If it's all matching and in 90% condition, you're probably looking at a $1500-$1700 pistol. At that price I would expect a 3 day inspection period with right of return so that I could evaluate it in hand. Grips may or may not be matching numbered. The side plate may or may not have a number inside that relates to the first 2 digits of the serial number.

The retail price from a dealer would be about 30% more than the collector value I quoted.

You can't believe any stories about 'bringbacks'. I've told stories myself, and condensed/edited them for brevity/clarity. This Luger may have been passed around in exchange for cigarettes, lost/won in a card game, picked up off a pile of confiscated weapons, and brought back by someone totally different. Then that person bought one "just like it" for his own memories. And added it to his war stories as one he captured.

We were all heroes. Why spoil a good story with the truth???
