Default Went shooting yesterday

I try to shoot the local club's Bullseye match (NRA Conventional Outdoor Pistol) at least twice a month, and yesterday I managed to score the 100 shown below in the third round of timed fire (25 yards). It's not my first 100 (actually my 4th), but it's by far my tightest one (nothing near the edge of the ten ring). I'm especially happy with this one because the wind was strong yesterday, gusting to 25 mph at times.

My Bullseye gun is pretty special to me. It's a Hi-Standard Supermatic Trophy (Model 102) and it's been in my wife's family since it was purchased new in 1958. It hadn't been shot much if at all in the last 40 years until I got it a couple of years ago. I cleaned a lot old gunk out of it, put an (improved) Volquartsen extractor in it, changed out the recoil spring and substituted a 5-1/2" aluminum shrouded barrel from Lebanon (Pa) Screw Products for the 7" bull barrel it came with. Even though it was a tack driver with the original barrel, the aluminum wrapped barrel came tapped for a rail to which I could easily add the red dot sight and still reduce the weight of the total package by a few ounces (and leave the rear sight in place). It also changed the pistol's weight distribution from nose-heavy to neutral, and the new barrel no slouch either. It's supposed to shoot 1" groups at 50 yards with CCI SV ammo, and I have no doubt that it would so from a Ransom Rest. I've scored as high as 97 with it from 50 yards.

It has been years since I fired a bullseye match, but can you use an optic now?

Yeah, red dots are very common as long as they are 1x. I shot irons for a few years and still do with my revolvers, but finally yielded to the fact that the red dot raised my scores.

I've shot a few times with Brian Zins (12-time Bullseye champ at Camp Perry) and was shocked to see him rack the slide of his 1911 by grabbing the red dot and pulling back. That's how solid his setup is (Aimpoint sight with custom machined shrouds fore and aft). The Bushnell won't take that abuse (not that I've tried it) but it's a great value for about $100 and works just fine for me.

Thanks! I know Bullseye is considered an "old guys" shooting sport, but it is a difficult and rewarding competition, considering that nobody has ever shot a perfect 900 match in over 100 years. It has made me a much better shooter.

That surprised me also. I used to shoot a S&W M41 and a Winchester M52C. Must have been 35 years ago. I recently acquired another M41 [mfg in 1969] but haven't shot it yet. Not feeling too good lately. I'm hoping I'll feel better after this coming Tuesday...

Default feeling good!

Hi Rich, I hope you get feeling better very soon! Not feeling up to par takes the wind out of your sails real quick! I deal with it all the time... So, I'm pretty sure, same as you, I'm pretty active when I feel good right off the bat in the morning?... But! I have spent the whole day in bed in the fetal position wondering why, but I generally snap out of it by sometime in the afternoon.... Even with that, life is good! Get better soon Rich! til....lat'r...GT...

With Rich's prognosis that he hopes to feel better by Tuesday, one wonders if his malady might be associated with a "taxing" situation? At any rate, best wishes for better times ahead.

P.S. Great shooting Mark!

Using an optic just does not seem "right" to me!

It's more of a political malady...

I've always loved the iron sights...My 52C had Redfield Olympic sights fore & aft...Multiple inserts for the hooded front...Micrometer adjustable rear...Beautifully made...For the life of me, I can't recall why I sold those two...

Mark

Very good score!
I go to the range too, although not so often as I used to go in the past, but still once or twice a week, generally with my 1911, I love shooting my own reloads, it's one of my favourite hobbies.
Shoot safe!

Congrats on a most successful shoot last Sunday. That target is one to be very proud of.....it sure would be if it were mine.

Sunday seems to have been a shooting day for folks. I didn't go to the range, but it was a beautiful day, so I took my Umarex P-08 CO2 BB gun and my bullet/BB trap into the back yard and just had a ball. My target didn't look as good as yours, but for a smooth bore gun shooting round balls, it did pretty go......most of all, it was FUN, and very inexpensive.

RHUFF, what number of shots are you getting from your co2 units?

I am getting about 40-45shots/cylinder I think. The last 4-5 shots are a bit on the weak side. I usually fire 5 shots, then go and check the target, and let the CO2 cylinder warm back up. That method seems to keep the shots pretty consistent until the end of the cylinder.
