My First Luger 1916 DWM VOPO

I picked this up a few weeks ago. I believe it to be a 1916, 9mm, VOPO. I haven't shot it yet, it needs a new magazine (on the way) and it turned out the firing pin guide was broken (another one the way also), but I'm sure I will at some point.

I figure I'll post a few pictures here, and let y'all tell me a lot I don't know.

Thanks for any information. If this is in the wrong place, of course, feel free to move it.

Good looking Vopo, there are some others posted hear, search for the threads and read about them.
There is also a chapter in "Police Lugers" on them.

The offset pin the the mag base makes me think it is also a "Vopo" made mag. Post a picture of the mag side markings and base too.

They are interesting in themselves, I like them; lots of history wrapped up in that one pistol!

If you get "tired" of it , let me know!

Welcome to this Forum, I'm glad you have chosen to be a part of our LUGER community and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Nice Luger, like most VOPO's it has good quality deep black finish and bulls-eye dark brown plastic grips. The Soviets used to store their captured guns in oil drums without grips that were added only later when the guns were needed. Vopo's Lugers are generally good shooters with mixed partd and replacement barrels. Generally range guns but remember to stay away from heavy loads.

There are no markings I can find on the sides of the magazine. On the base are the numbers ("front" end) 2, the the S/N 6570 across the wide part of the base, with the number 6 below.

Sounds like you have a Simson magazine re-numbered to your Vopo.
Nice to have a matching magazine.

So tell me. Is there a trick to loading these magazines? I can't get the cartridges to feed from the magazine. Neither the one that came with the gun, nor the new Mec-gar one I just got.

They don't stack evenly in the magazine. Some will point "up", some lay flat. If they're pointed "up", they double feed. If they're flat, they just nose into the front wall of the magazine.

Something sounds fishy here. All rounds should lie flat parallel to the bore.
Try Youtube for videos about loading the Luger magazine.

The follower should help establish the plane that levels the rounds in the magazine.

It would help to have pictures showing the top of the magazine, the follower inside the magazine and the markings on the base.

It's possible that something has damaged the feed lips on the top.

It's also possible that the overall length of your 9mm rounds is a bit long, which would prevent them from lying flat on the follower...

Don't try and jam all 7 rounds into the magazine. Stop at around five and see how things work.
