What you have is an Old Model Parabellum, made in Germany around 1901. If you report the serial number on the front of the frame, whether or not GERMANY is stamped there, and any other marks which may be on the receiver and barrel, it may be possible to tell you more.

This is fascinating. Is there a story involved, and can it be told?

Thanks Dwight.

GERMANY is stamped. I will get more info. I know the Ottoman Empire was in combat in and around Kirkuk in defense against the British Army in WWI - and I believe the Ottoman Army to be equipped with Lugers. (Also found a WWI vintage Colt 1911, albeit was in Kurdish hands)

For the particular pistol, you can see a paperclip like wire modified on the extractor. Rifling is near shot out. Also has grip safety, which is interesting. The front sight blade is completely worn to nub.

Just basically reiterating that it was taken from a KIA ISIS fighter after a failed ISIS assault on Peshmerga held village.

Fashinating is the correct word, we can only imagine how many tales that gun could tell us, I think it would be better to see some close up pictures of it, anyway it's probably a mix of several guns starting fom the 1900 toggle.
Great acquisition!

Wonderful find, and thanx for posting the photos and story. These old warhorses don't die, they just get "fixed" and carry on. I wonder how many people have handled/carried this Luger??

Was DWM required to import mark "GERMANY" on any guns beyond those sent to US distributors?

I can't see detail of the proof marks on this pistol, but it's likely a commercial rather than a military contract gun.

Perhaps the Luger stolen from Lowell Thomas while he was there covering Lawrence of Arabia (good story, at least...)?

It might be possible to tell more with the serial number (especially from somewhere like distributor records)...

Try and take some pictures in shaded natural light (not flash) and use the closeup setting to get sharp focus on markings, particularly proof and anything on the rear of the frame near the toggle. Also, any marking on top of the chamber or on the barrel.

no, Germany marking was only required for USA, although the distributor was in NY and its very likely that guns were sent to Canada or Mexico from NY.

All 1900's had grip safety's.

I would be very interested in the story and pictures for vol IV of Vet Bring Backs - I give full credit to the owner and it will be published in a year or so

Wow, amazing old gun! The top of the receiver looks a little ground up, to say the least. It's a commercial, but I'm wondering if it could have been an American Eagle, which would be surprising if it were not defaced. Looks like a 9 mm, as well. The extractor might be Waffenfabrik Kirkuk...

There is sorta like a wire coil under the right toggle knob, about where the ejector is...
Extractor, not ejector, Rich. Look at the breech toggle and you can see that the extractor is missing and somebody shoved a bent wire in the channel to more or less accomplish the extractor's job.

Makes me wonder how that poor old Luger ended up in Iraq.
One thing is for sure if all the ISIS "soldiers" had weapons like that probably we wouldn't have too much to worry about.

I would decline to stand up in front of this pistol at any range!

Mind I wouldn't put myself in front of a 9mm not even at the distance of half a mile and this video is quite self explanatory, still if I had to choose perhaps would prefer to fight against an old luger instead of a full loaded AK47, at least in theory.

That test was at only 440y. Even the artillery Luger has sights adjustable to 800m to compensate for bullet drop...

The Luger was a secondary weapon. The main weapon this particular fighter was carrying was a FN FAL. (A large number of ISIS fighters are armed with American M16A4's in reality besides Kalashnikovs - with most sidearms being Glock 19's) It would have been most likely used as a backup weapon, or in the case of ISIS a weapon for summarily executions.

I'll include some pictures uploaded directly to the sight in time.

Pictures uploaded directly to sight. The P38 was captured in march from an ISIS fighter as well. The PPSH41 captured in Feb. The K98 captured in June.
