If you have a functional mag, it has a strong mag spring. If you plan to only load 4-5 rounds in the mag, then you can possibly get by without the tool. If, on the other hand, you plan to load the mag to full capacity, then the tool is very handy. It can help from producing discomfort in one's thumb, and allow full loading. YMMV
