Today is the Italian National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on 2 June each year. The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.
I post a short video made a few days ago in Rome with the Bersaglieri fanfare. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrB-8RaRotM Sergio

On my only visit to Italy, in about 1991, I learned of another festival. I'm not sure if it's celebrated nationally, but in the coastal community of Santa Margarita, it's called the "Day of Thunder". The bar at the trattoria in which I had dinner had its walls covered in photos of men posing with scores of little cast iron mortars. It was explained that on this day every year, they'd load them and set them off all at once, breaking every window for km around! Sergio, do you know what this celebration is?

David
Honestly I've never heard of it but I went to look for it on the Net, and found that in Santa Margherita Ligure they have a local festival in March called "Festa della Primavera" (Spring Festival), which I suppose is the one you have been at. Every town however small, have a festival especially in Summer and in early Autumn. David perhaps it's time for you to come back for another stay in Italy: nice places, a lot of culture and gorgeous food, altogether there is an awful lot to see. Sergio
