Eric, thanks for the beautiful remembrance; and, Herr Sieger, you are correct of course, it is Austrian, Austro-Hungarian.

To me, the most dramatic time I heard the "Blue Danube" was when Stanley Kubrick used it to background the TWA Trans orbital ship match trajectories with the space station landing dock. Somehow, it was perfect and gave both the Science and the Music new grandeur.

Thanks, again,

Gunny

PS. With mixed emotions we note the end of that gracious era with the assignations of July, 1914 and the beginning of the slaughter in August; one hundred years ago this summer. This past Spring I was giving a guest lecture to a '30's something class of seminarians, who all hold various undergraduate degrees. As my lecture traced and commented upon Biblical references to horses and chariotry in the Ancient Near East, I made passing reference to wheeled warfare in the Sinai through the centuries. I mentioned the example of "Rolls-Royce" in 1916. I received nothing but blank stares. So I asked the class, "What world changing event began in August of 1914." No one, out of 35 students, knew the answer. Later, my mentor and the prof of the class, smiled lamely about it and said, "John, you and I are just dinosaurs."

Hell, I'm going to listen again.

Gee, thanks, Eric! It still gives me the same hope now as it did so many years ago.

Memory is a fickle thing, though. The Trans Orbital ship was Pan American not TWA. And I absolutely love the fact that the second ring was still under construction.

We'll make it "there" yet. All we need is enormous amounts of cheap energy and a way around the speed of light.

Thanks, again

Gunny
