Back in 1970, on the bus ride from Perris Island to Camp LeJeune, we passed by houses with dirt floors and greased newspapers for windows...(Doors were open, almost Summer)...Kids without shoes playing in the yards...And this was on main roads (or what passed for main roads there & then)...

The only time in my life that I've felt really poor was in the early '70's while attending college on the [say it with a bitter laugh!] GI Bill, I went without food for a couple days so my dog could eat...
